This is a snapshot of the experiences and lesson learnt from my design journey, a road that has taken me through the technical depths of Unity, the refined principles of iOS design, and designing websites.

Unity, iOS, and Websites: The Interactive Side

My journey into design started with Unity, a platform that allows for a 3D, immersive user experience. Crafting virtual environments pushed my creativity and technical skills to their limits. Learning to navigate Unity’s robust tools and capabilities was both challenging and rewarding. It’s a platform where the user’s sense of agency and exploration take centre stage, where interactions need to feel natural and intuitive despite the complex coding behind the scenes.

Designing for iOS was a different beast entirely. With its specific guidelines and standards, iOS pushes designers to craft clear, intuitive, and seamless experiences while adhering to Apple’s well-established design language. The beauty of iOS design lies in simplicity and user-centricity. It’s about creating an engaging journey across interconnected screens, where each swipe and tap feels natural and purposeful.

Website design provided me the opportunity to merge the interactivity of Unity and the structure of iOS design. It involves the careful orchestration of diverse elements on a two-dimensional canvas, leading to engaging narratives that users can navigate at their own pace. Website design is a balancing act – incorporating interactive elements, maintaining aesthetic appeal, and ensuring the ease of navigation.

Multi-media (Film), Banner Design, and Poster Design: The Storytelling Side

Moving into film, as a multimedia design element, allowed me to tell stories in a dynamic, captivating way. Crafting a narrative within the framework of motion, sound, and visual elements is a unique challenge. It’s about capturing and holding attention, conveying a message, and eliciting an emotional response, all within a limited time frame.

Banner design, on the other hand, is a study in minimalism. With limited space and fleeting user attention, delivering a clear, impactful message becomes paramount. Every element in banner design – from the choice of imagery to the use of typography – must work harmoniously to communicate effectively. It’s a snapshot that must encapsulate an idea, a product, or an event instantly and compellingly.

Finally, poster design is a junction of art and communication. It is about creating a static visual that speaks volumes. Poster design has its roots in traditional art and requires careful consideration of composition, colour, typography, and hierarchy to create an impactful message.

Drawing Comparisons

Comparing these two sets of platforms – Unity, iOS, and website design with film, banner design, and poster design – one can see a stark difference in their core objectives. The former set revolves around user interaction and navigation, focusing on delivering a seamless, engaging user experience. They are about the user’s journey through a virtual environment or a series of screens.

In contrast, film, banner, and poster design are about communicating a message or telling a story in a limited time or space. They require the designer to create compelling, instantly engaging visuals that convey a clear message at a glance.

Designing across these diverse platforms has provided me with valuable insights and a versatile skill set. Regardless of the medium, the core principles of design – clarity, coherence, user-centricity – hold true. However, how these principles manifest varies greatly, offering a rich and diverse landscape for exploration and innovation.
